Most common are carbo-nitriding, case hardening, nitro-carburizing, traditional hardening and tempering or induction hardening All depending on whether you want to increase surface hardness or affect the strength of the entire part.

Heat treatment can also make other changes to the material such as, normalization, recrystallization annealing or relaxation when the original properties of the material are regained.
